USD 50 billion: Estimated loss to piracy of streaming media

Digital TV Research released the results of a recent study on the prevalence of piracy in the online streaming industry. According to the study, the cost of piracy to Netflix, Amazon and all other streaming services will be in excess of $50 billion between 2016 and 2022.

The study included analysis of piracy in streaming services across 138 countries. The projected loss in subscription charges and ad revenue is estimated at $52 billion in the same period.

In 2016, revenues from legitimate streaming services were $37 billion and $26.7 billion worth of streaming media was lost to piracy. The same figures are estimated to be $55.5 billion and $37.4 billion, respectively in 2017.
