Secure File Transfer Protocol (SFTP) or SSH File Transfer Protocol facilitates data access and data transfer over a Secure Shell (SSH) data stream. The functionality of SFTP is like that of FTP. SFTP is an extended version of SSH 2.0. It is used with VPN applications and Transport Layer Security (TLS). In order to prevent passwords and other sensitive information from being transferred over the network, both the data and commands are encrypted in SFTP.
