The Real-Time Messaging Protocol (RTMP) protocol was originally developed by Macromedia (Now Adobe) for high-performance transmission of audio, video and data over the Internet between Flash based platform technologies, including Flash Player & Adobe AIR and the Server.
RTMP is available as an open specification to create products and technology that enable delivery of video, audio, and data in the open AMF, SWF, FLV, and F4V formats compatible with Adobe Flash Player.

RTMP Usage
The biggest feature of RTMP is to do Live Streaming with the support of an Encoder like Flash Media Encoder, a user can ingest the live video feed to RTMP server and via CDN and a compatible Online Video Player the feed is played back on users devices.
