Variable Bit Rate (VBR)

VBR or Variable Bit Rate is a term used in computing and telecommunications that relates to the bitrate used in video or sound encoding. VBR files differ the amount of output data per time segment contrasted with constant bitrate (CBR). While a smaller amount space is allocated to less complex segments, VBR allows a higher bitrate (Hence needs more storage space) to be allocated to the more complex segments of media files. The average of these rates can be calculated…

Adaptive Bitrate Streaming (ABR)

ABR or Adaptive Bitrate Streaming(ABS) is a performance management method for streaming multimedia over computer networks.  In the past, most video streaming approaches were built on RTSP or RTP. However, today most adaptive streaming technologies are built for transmission over HTTP over large, broad-distribution networks. With this streaming method, viewers can get an optimal image and sound quality. Adaptive streaming technologies produce multiple files from the same source file and then distribute it to viewers watching on different devices through…

Bitrate

Bitrate describes the rate at which bits are transferred from one point to another. In simple language, it measures how much data is transmitted from one point to another in a given amount of time. Commonly, bitrate is measured in megabits per second (Mbps), kilobits per second (Kbps) or bits per second (bps). Bitrate can describe the quality of an audio or video file. For instance, a video file that is compressed at 4000 Kbps will look much better compared to…

Digital Video Broadcasting (DVB)

Digital Video Broadcasting (DVB) is a set of globally open standards that define digital broadcasting using existing cable, satellite and terrestrial infrastructures. These standards define the data link layer and physical layer of the distribution system. Similar to all digital communication systems, DVB uses the simple yet powerful binary digit pair i.e. ones and zeros, to link to the data that is being transmitted. Digital Television is the most accepted type of transmission handled by DVB, which consists of an…
