The video streaming giant Amazon becomes the first online video streaming company to nab an Oscar nomination for best picture for its “Manchester By the Sea” nominated Tuesday for six Academy Awards, along with the best director (Kenneth Lonergan) and best actor (Casey Affleck) awards.
The competitor Netflix, however, has failed to land a nomination in one of the Academy’s major categories. The difference lies in the distribution approach as Amazon despite being into OTT space has taken a theatrical window approach, whereas Netflix pushed a day-and-date release model.
