Showmax, the South African Naspers based video streaming service, is expanding to 36 countries in Africa. The company has a mixture of local and international content. It has enjoyed a first mover’s advantage in South Africa having entered the market before Netflix. After expanding to Ethiopia, Kenya, Tanzania, Senegal and Mauritius, it plans to offer content in the Swahili language. Network infrastructure problems like low internet speeds and high costs are challenges faced by video streaming services looking into the region.
“The growth potential of the African market is huge, and we’re not the only internet TV service looking to meet that demand,” said Showmax’s head of products Barron Ernst.
