Video expected to be 75% of mobile data traffic by 2020

Roshan Dwivedi Published on : 05 February 2016

Mobile video streaming consumption is growing by leaps and bounds. A report by Cisco Visual Networking Index shows that it will grow at 62% annually (compounded), and by 2020, the growth rate for videos will be highest for any mobile application. Another update by Global Mobile Data Traffic Forecast explains that since videos have ‘higher bit rates than other mobile content types, mobile video will generate much of the mobile traffic growth through 2020’. Also it is predicted that around 75% of the monthly 30 exabytes of mobile data will be contributed by video.

Unlike general usage, video consumption is high during evening hours. This will effect networks as traffic will increase further during these hours because of video-on-demand services.
