The concept ‘Prime-time’ is something that doesn’t have an impact in video-on-demand services. Hence TV shows that are facing stiff competition for important time slots are being welcomed on streaming services. Time slots play an important role on ratings for traditional TV shows, while VOD services have no such slot limitations.
A show called ‘Empire’ never made it to the top 30 Canadian rating charts, but it was picked by streaming service, Shomi which is reporting it to be a success. It reports it to rank in their top 10 most watched shows. “Typically speaking, the more multicultural shows don’t perform as well on linear television as they do on (streaming services)” says Marni Shulman, head of Shomi’s content and programming.
