Viu arrives in Thailand

Viu, PCCW Media’s pan-regional video streaming service that has a presence in 14 countries in Asia and the Middle East will be launched in Thailand. Premium Asian content with Thai subtitles consisting of dramas and variety shows from Korea and Japan will be available for local audiences. They can be accessed via a mobile app or website. Two tiers have been introduced for the users: Free, advertising supported viewing and subscription service with express content access and premium features such as unlimited downloads, 1080p HD video quality and no ads video viewing. Viu’s premium service in Thailand is to be launched in partnership with Advanced Info Service(AIS) which is a telecommunications company.

Millennials who are very receptive to online video viewing and digital advertisements comprise of Thailand’s viewer base. According to Janice Lee, managing director, PCCW Media Group, Viu Thailand gradually aims to mirror success achieved in other Asian markets that have healthy growth in subscription and advertising revenue. Hallyu (A term widely used to refer to the popularity of Korean entertainment and culture across Asia and other parts of the world) is becoming increasingly notable in Thailand. Viu has 8,20,000 Facebook fans on Viu Thailand Facebook page. K-communities and die-hard Korean fans in Thailand, eagerly await Viu’s service launch so they can access the vast library of premium Korean and other Asian content. PCCW research reveals that 93% of Thailand’s online population have watched videos online. Viu video-on-demand (VOD) service is currently available in 15 markets including Hong Kong, Singapore, Malaysia, India, Indonesia to name a few.
