Numbers for the global video infrastructure market are looking splendid in this quarter with a revenue posting of $3.1 Billion as per the Q2 reports prepared by ACG Research.

However, the market share for STBs which includes IPTV STBs, Cable STBs & DTAs, fell by 1.9 per cent quarter-on-quarter and 17.1 per cent year-on-year. A clear reason being the movement of service providers to cloud-based delivery solutions.

Cloud, software and platform based services have become the current trends determining almost every next industry move and decision. Most specifically, the video market has been the biggest contributor the cloud services market, leveraging the cloud-friendly services to deliver content.

Alcatel-Lucent’s recent launch of a cloud-based IP video storage and content delivery technology with its new Cloud DVR platform, ARRIS integration of TiVo Cloud and DVR software into its STBs to enable SPs to offer TV Everywhere and Video on demand services on multiple screens and Cisco’s selling off its STB business to Technicolor for a puny $600 million were some key industry moves this year, all hovering around one thing – cloud-based video.
