With about a million broadband subscribers being added each day until 2022, video will be the major contributor to this increase in the subscriber base, representing 75% of all mobile data traffic by then, according to a recent report.
As per the report, by 2022, global mobile data traffic will increase 8 times from what it is currently which is equal to the number of people in Spain streaming HD video all day for a month or one subscriber streaming HD video non-stop for 3.55 million years or 31 billion hours of continuous HD video streaming. It is estimated that there will be a growth of 50% each year in mobile video traffic until 2022. Social networking is set to grow by 38% each year for the next 6 years.
There will be a decline in social networking traffic from 13% in 2016 to around 11% in 2022 due to more robust growth in video. Embedded video used in social media and Web pages continues to be on the rise due to the usage of larger device screens, higher resolution and new platforms that include live streaming.
The report found that factors such new applications and a large number of different sized smart devices will also impact the traffic mix. For instance, tablets account for a larger chunk of video traffic than smartphones. It suggests that tablets are more commonly used for watching longer video content whereas smartphones are used for watching short video content. Read More
