According to a survey by Nielsen, video streaming platform like Netflix is gaining popularity in South Africa. The survey asked 30000 online respondents from 61 countries. It was found out that some form of video-on-demand programming was accessed by around 63% South Africans and 79% of them access at the least once every week. Online video services are mostly being used in addition to traditional TV services, and not in place of them. 85% of the respondents did not plan on cutting the cord any time soon. The market for VOD in Africa is at an infant stage and offers a lot of opportunities.

Nielsen SA MD Craig Henry said: “The projected growth of VOD programming services in SA has the potential to create opportunities for all players in the media ecosystem.” He added: “For audiences, advertisers and content providers alike, advantage will be gained with an in-depth and keen understanding of not just how consumer viewing dynamics are changing, but why they are changing.”
