Cord-cutting triples in the US since 2013

Roshan Dwivedi Published on : 03 April 2018

According to reports, the number of US households using (over-the-top) OTT service has seen a gigantic growth since 2013 and as a consequence, the no. of cord cutters in the country has tripled accordingly.

While five years ago streaming-only homes were just over 5 million, in 2017, the figure clocked 14.1 million. As per reports, a majority of households have at least two different streaming services with 32 % use three or more. However, it cannot be termed as a huge number since the data represents just 11% of all the US households.

Expectedly, Netflix, Amazon Prime Video, YouTube, Hulu are at the helm of this growth as these four firms comprise 80% of the total OTT viewing hour. The reports also suggest that 70 percent of households that subscribe to a streaming service also had a cable, satellite, or telco TV subscription. The report forecasts that the number of OTT-only homes will grow by 8.2 percent to 17.9 million by 2021, while those that mix cable and streaming will fall by 2.4 percent.
