NBTC reduces stringent registration rules on Over-the-top Companies

The National Broadcasting and Telecommunications Commission (NBTC) – Thailand, that had imposed stringent guidelines during the past weeks on OTT Companies, is going to be less stringent, as per an official at the Digital Economy and Society (DE) Ministry.

This is so that the regulatory practice goes hand in hand with the new NBTC law that has been in effect since June 22. Previously, NBTC’s regulatory framework that forced OTT service operators and platforms to register has been criticized by OTT related businesses as they felt that it could affect the digital ecosystem.

The aim of the latest NBTC board meeting is to slow down the present regulatory framework. Proper period should be provided for OTT comments since OTT Companies could get confused if given short notice.
In April, a resolution was passed under the old NBTC law that video-on-demand (VOD) is put under the category of broadcast business. A subcommittee has been formed to develop a regulatory policy to govern OTT business. Read More
