Traditional cable TV has been surpassed by Netflix in terms of total subscribers, for the first time as per Leichtman Research. Compared with 48.61 cable TV subscribers, Netflix accounts for 50.85 million subscribers. Small cable networks (5% of total cable customers) were not taken into consideration in the total cable subscribers figure. It is not surprising considering the doubling of Netflix’s subscriber base (27 million subs) in the past 5 years.
Even though cable subs are on a decline by 4 million in the last 5 years, it’s not a huge drop. Satellite TV has around 38 million subscribers. There has been an addition of 318,0000 customers in Q1 with Direct TV coming in the way of gains that did not surpass customer losses.
