Leader in Subscription video-on-demand (SVOD) has a 3.4% reach in Spain’s internet households. Over a six-month period, the number of subscribers have doubled. A report by Comisión Nacional de los Mercados y la Competencia that studied the Spanish online habits, shows that the streaming platform is currently being used by 540,000 homes. As per the last survey, the findings of which were published in November 2016, OTT Platform service was available in 1.8% of internet homes.
Netflix is the only SVOD player that has reported growth in the last six months. Movistar’s Yomvi, whicsh is offered as a bundled service to pay-TV subscriptions is used by 7.6% homes. It is also the market’s most used service. Wuaki.tv, is the third most option is available in 1.3% of homes.
HBO España and Amazon Prime Video are not currently included in the CNMC survey.
88% of internet homes don’t pay for SVOD despite its growth as an entertainment option. However, with free services being offered by free-to-air (FTA) channels that are gaining penetration in recent months, VOD has gained a strong hold on Spanish households. Atresmedia’s Atresplayer is the most used option, with 46.6% of Internet users watching content on it, followed by RTVE.es (39.3%) and Mediaset’s MiTele (37.6%). Read More
