Global information and research agency NPD has come up with its quarterly Connected Home Forecast report which predicts that by the end of 2018, an approximate 231 million internet-ready devices will be connected to the Internet. This growth rate is pegged at 82 percent growth from 2014 to 2018.
The largest drivers of this growth are the increasing adoption of connected TVs in US homes and the growing penetration of VOD services like Amazon, Netflix and Hulu and the streaming devices that come bundled with them. While connected TVs will drive a growth of 37%, the streaming players will drive a growth of 33%.
Apart from the hardware, the growing subscriber base of VOD services like Netflix has also been a reason behind this growth. As per the NPD report, at least 5% of US homes have subscribed to at least one such service and it grows to 7% in homes with connected TVs.
