43% of broadband users in Germany now subscribe to a VoD service

Following the market launch of US providers Netflix and Amazon and their intensive marketing activities, VoD has gained in popularity since 2014.

A total of 43 percent of all German internet users use chargeable VoD services, which is equivalent to about 24 million users, according to the recent Goldmedia survey “Pay-VoD in Germany 2016-2021”. This is more than twice as many as in 2014. Revenue from commercial VoD services will increase accordingly, from about EUR 423 million in 2015 to closer to the billion mark in 2021 at EUR 990 million.

Following the market launch of Netflix and Amazon, the subscription-based VoD model is established as the highest-revenue segment.
