Australian and New Zealand artists earned $62 million in royalties from online streaming in the year to date. According to APRA AMCOS, that’s a 127 percent increase and is majorly driven by distribution on digital platforms and growth in the number of subscribers.
Richard Mallett, head of revenue at APRA AMCOS, said, ”Video on demand services like Netflix and Stan have increased the digital royalty revenue for artists this year. That is because Australian shows with homegrown music, like Josh Thomas’ Please Like Me, are being made available to a broader audience.”
It is estimated that around 4 million people in Australia and New Zealand subscribe to a streaming service, and about one in eight Australians paying a monthly fee to audio streaming platforms like Spotify and Apple Music.
