What is Open Source SRT Protocol?

SRT Protocol

With the rise of video streaming space, more and more businesses are actively participating and leveling up their streaming standards. The growing demand for video streaming and a massive library of video content has somehow caused negligence towards content security. As a result, in recent years, the streaming industry has witnessed several cyberattacks like content piracy, user data breach, copyright issues, phishing attacks, malware injection, etc. Hence, to provide overall security to streaming content over unreliable public networks, the SRT protocol was introduced.

In this blog, we will learn about one of the most used open-source protocols, SRT. Lets go through the complete idea of what SRT is, its functionality, and how SRT has secured video streaming.

What is SRT?

SRT stands for Secure Reliable Transport. SRT optimizes streaming performance across video delivery networks and delivers high-quality and secure videos over the public internet.

This UDP-based protocol works best towards maintaining bandwidth, handles delay, jitter, packet loss, bandwidth fluctuation, and delivers low latency video. This open-source tunable protocol has around 250 alliance members and is used by leading video streaming solutions like OBS, Wirecast, vMix, XSplit, VLC, and GStreamer.

Now SRT protocol security is used by media publishers, broadcasters, and even some of the top live media streaming organizations like Comcast, fox sports, and NFL.

Facts about SRT-

  • As SRT functions on public internet networks, users can take the help of proxy servers or can use a peer-to-peer connection to use the remote SRT connection.
  • SRT protocol does not support 2-way communication applications, for example, Zoom. It is the best for one-way broadcasting like news reporting, live broadcasting, backhaul, and bi-directional interviews.
  • The transmission of high-quality video through secure reliable transport protocol has been possible by integrating low latency UDP with ARQ(Advanced re-request) packet loss recovery.
  • For video streaming protection and to ensure the secure delivery of video content, SRT uses AES-128 and AES-256 encryption.

How does SRT function?

SRT uses a latency buffer on both the sender and receiver sides during the transmission. The receiver side buffer restructures the sender’s stream packet and sequences them before sending them to the decoder.

In case any packet loss happens in between the process, the receiver buffer sends a negative acknowledgment to the sender side. In response, the lost data packet is resent from the sender buffer.

To secure data flow between different networks, SRT includes listener and caller mode. It decides who is going to initiate the connection and who is going to accept it. By using, caller and listeners, it is possible to use any firewall to stream inside a domain.

Secure reliable transport allows users to stream different content types, including MPEG-4/AVC and HEVC (high-efficiency video coding).

Conclusion-

By implementing SRT protocol, video streaming providers effortlessly solve three major issues commonly faced while streaming over an unreliable network. SRT gives VOD platform providers a way more affordable streaming solution replacement as compared to the satellite and private networks. It even supports better video latency compared to satellites.

Being a reliable streaming protocol, SRT replaces RTMP in the aspects of better video latency and utilization of streaming bandwidth.

With the support of a professional live streaming platform, it’s possible to get the best benefits of the SRT protocol security. A secure professional video streaming works best towards generating revenue and leads.
