According to a latest forecast by the Ericsson Mobility Report, there will be 550 million 5G subscriptions in 2022. North America will lead the uptake in 5G subscriptions with about a quarter of all mobile subscriptions are expected to be for 5G in 2022.

Asia Pacific is expected to be the second fastest growing region for 5G subscriptions, with 10% of all subscriptions being 5G by 2022. Middle East and Africa will shift dramatically from being GSM/EDGE-only subscriptions to 80% of subscriptions being WCDMA/HSPA and LTE. The report states there will be 3.9 billion smartphone subscriptions by the end of 2016, out of which 90% will be registered on WCDMA/HSPA and LTE networks. The report also forecasts for mobile subscriptions in 2022 to be 8.9 billion, 90% of which to be for mobile broadband.
