Adults under 40 are shifting away from traditional means of television consumption. Sixty-nine percent (69%) of these younger Americans use an online streaming service like Netflix or Hulu to watch TV and movies, compared to 39% of 40-64 year olds and just 11% of adults over 65. The under-40 crowd is also the most likely to watch a movie this way in an average week.
This helps explain the transition away from premium paid cable over the last couple years. In 2013, a third of Americans were most likely to watch a movie on TV showing on a channel like HBO or Showtime. Today, just 17% say the same. More now opt for one they’ve rented through a streaming or VoD service or a movie showing on regular network television.
