According to the North America SVOD Forecasts report from Digital TV Research, North America SVoD subscribers will be 112 million for movie and TV services only, excluding sports by the end of 2016, up by 19 million in 2015. The total SVOD is forecasted to climb to 138 million by 2021.
The report only expects 117 million TV households by 2021, so the SVoD total will represent 104% of TV households. An average US household subscribes to 1.5 subscriptions based VOD services. Out of the 127 million US total in 2021, the report forecasts that 43 million will be secondary SVoD subscriptions or there will be 84 million primary SVoD subscribers in the US by 2021, which is 71% of the TV households.
