According to a recent Futuresource study, subscription video-on-demand (SVOD) is becoming a force in China, in spite of piracy being rife in the country. The major drivers are a combination of demand from younger viewers and the fight for consumers between heavyweight Chinese SVOD companies such as Baidu, Alibaba and Tencent.

Alibaba acquired the SVOD service – Youku Tudou in 2015, while the search engine giant Baidu owns iQiyi SVOD service. Each of these services including Le TV have approximately 10 million paying subs and are continuing to grow fast.
