Netflix, the global video streaming giant, trials a low-cost mobile-only subscription plan in India at just $3.62 (INR 250) per month. The trial plan is offered at half a cost of Netflix’s basic plan and allows users to stream videos in Standard Definition(SD) resolution on a single mobile phone.
This comes after Netflix aimed to boost its presence in a price sensitive market where smartphone users are increasing. Presently, Netflix is offering three monthly subscription plans in India, ranging from Rs 500 to 800, which are pretty expensive as compared to the offerings of rivals.
Commenting on the trial, Greg Peters, Chief Product Officer – Netflix, said: “Now we’ll experiment with other pricing models, not only for India but around the world, that allows us to broaden access by providing a pricing tier that sits below our current lowest tier. We’ll see how that does in terms of being able to accelerate our growth and get more access”.
