Roshan Dwivedi Published on : 27 January 2016

Revenues at online portals for streaming series, films and short clips in Germany are expected to rise to EUR 717 million this year, an increase of 24 percent compared with the previous year (EUR 579 mln), according to IT association Bitkom, citing figures by market research institute IHS.

VoD providers use different business models to make money with their portals. Free, advert-based offerings have generated the highest turnover at EUR 316 million. The most important providers in this segment are video portals such as Vimeo and YouTube or online portals such as Facebook, T-Online, Web.de or Yahoo, or the websites of private TV channels.

Fee-based video portals are estimated to yield EUR 401 million. These include portals with unlimited content for a monthly fee as well as services where the user pays for individual videos. Examples are VoD platforms such as Amazon Video, Apple iTunes Google Play, Maxdome, Netflix, Sky Go or Watchever.
