SVOD gains popularity in Sub Saharan Africa

According to research, SVOD revenue in Sub Saharan Africa is expected to reach a whopping US$775 million by 2023. However, the forecast is still considered low due to the lower subscription fee charged by a few OTT platforms.

Among the countries, South Africa (3.37 million) and Nigeria (2.61 million) combinely form 60% of the region’s total SVOD subscribers in the region.

Video streaming giant Netflix has dominated the Sub Saharan landscape in 2017 followed by Showmax and iRoko. As per research, the three OTT providers will continue to rule the SVOD market in the region until 2023. Currently, Netflix boasts 4.026 million subscribers in Sub Saharan region followed by Showmax (1,728,000) and iRoko (1,536,000).
