TCP vs UDP

Two essential transport-layer protocols in the Internet Protocol Suite are Transmission Control Protocol (TCP) and User Datagram Protocol (UDP). Although they allow data transfer between devices over networks, their dependability, speed, and connection strategies vary greatly. Both are necessary for contemporary internet communication and function above the Internet Protocol (IP).

Overview

TCP is a protocol that is focused on connections. TCP uses a three-way handshake method to create a secure and dependable connection prior to data transmission. TCP ensures that data is delivered correctly and accurately. To guarantee dependability, it uses flow control, sequencing, retransmission, and acknowledgment techniques. TCP experiences increased overhead and somewhat increased latency as a result of these extra checks. When data integrity is crucial, it is most frequently used in online browsing (HTTP/HTTPS), email communication (SMTP), and file transfer (FTP) applications.

As a connectionless protocol, UDP transmits data packets, also known as datagrams, without first establishing a connection and confirming delivery. Error correction, packet delivery, and packet order are not guaranteed by UDP. Faster data transfer rates and reduced latency are the results of this basic strategy. Applications like live video streaming, online gaming, video conferencing, DNS lookups, and VoIP that demand speed over perfect accuracy frequently

Key Differences

(i)Type of Connection: TCP is connection-oriented, while UDP is connectionless.
(ii)Reliability: TCP is reliable, as it guarantees delivery and maintains order. UDP is not reliable, as it does not guarantee delivery or maintain order.
(iii)Speed: UDP is faster than TCP because it has less overhead.
(iv)Error Handling: TCP handles errors by recovering from them, while UDP handles errors by detecting them but not recovering from them.
(v)Header Size: The header size of TCP is larger (minimum of 20 bytes), while the header size of UDP is smaller (8 bytes).

Use Cases

TCP is used in applications that require reliability, while UDP is used in applications that require speed.
