Indian OTT market grew by leaps and bounds in the year 2017. One major reason behind this is the advent of Reliance Jio – the recent star from the Reliance Group of Industries which telecom giant which disrupted the sub-continent’s telecom scenario. Jio’s coverage and plans ensured that OTT players could receive the best reception and cover the right target audience. OTT players also went regional this year and offered content in languages such as Tamil, Telugu, Malayalam, Kannada, Bengali, Marathi, Punjabi, Gujarati etc.

Viu, the OTT video service by PCCW focused on the regional content and broaden its content library with over 3000 hours of original content. Viu has also become the first OTT provider to offer a bilingual content in Hindi and Telugu. Also, Viu has roped in with Samsung, Micromax and Annapurna Studio to offer refreshing localized content.

Hotstar this year launched its Tamil original series which was later dubbed into Telugu with English subtitles available for both of them. JioTV, the online version of cable TV has partnerships with almost all national and regional channels and allows the user to stream content up to seven days old.

While SonyLiv came up with regional original series in Marathi and a web series in Gujarati, Viacom 18 backed Voot announced content for kid’s section in Hindi, Kannada, and Marathi. Similarly, ALTBalaji has come up with one original show in Bengali and one in Tamil and thereby made its presence felt in the regional content arena.

SunTV Network launched its digital connect app compatible with every screen format and currently has a movie library of over 4000 titles and TV programs in Telugu, Tamil, Kannada, and Malayalam.
