Over-the-top (OTT) video streaming services namely: Netflix, YouTube and Facebook need to register their over-the-top (OTT) streaming services with Thailand’s national communications regulator by 22 July failing which they could face potential advertising bans.
About 24 digital terrestrial TV channels and 11 OTT operators have already complied with the registration request of National Broadcasting and Telecommunication Commission (NBTC). Other such US video streaming and social media biggies have been granted 30 days to comply with the mandatory order, according to the Bangkok Post.
As per these regulations, foreign OTT platforms need to establish and register a local office in Thailand that would make it mandatory for them to pay corporate income tax.
Also, the offices must be run by executives that have the authority to issue service directives and clarify any issues that emerge in Thailand.
An advertising or other ban may be imposed on any OTT provider that does not register by 22 July as mandated by NBTC. This mandate is being introduced with the intent of making sure that unsuitable content and illegal advertisements are not on the popular OTT Streaming Services’ sites. Read More
