ABR or Adaptive Bitrate Streaming(ABS) is a performance management method for streaming multimedia over computer networks.
In the past, most video streaming approaches were built on RTSP or RTP. However, today most adaptive streaming technologies are built for transmission over HTTP over large, broad-distribution networks. With this streaming method, viewers can get an optimal image and sound quality. Adaptive streaming technologies produce multiple files from the same source file and then distribute it to viewers watching on different devices through different connection speeds.

There are hundreds of possible vectors, everything from network intrusion to player/app doppelgangers to CDN leeching, through which pirates can obtain and redistribute content.
