OBS stands for Open Broadcaster Software. It is free and open source and is one of the most popular live-streaming software on the market. It works on Windows, macOS and Linux.
People use OBS to:
OBS is an encoder and captures your video and audio. It turns them into a stream and then it sends the stream to a live streaming platform. As an open-source and versatile software, OBS is widely used for its ability to integrate RTMP streaming easily, delivering high-quality, low-latency streams to various streaming platforms.

Follow these eight steps for streaming with OBS. They work for any streaming platform.
Always download from the official site. Check that you have the latest version.
OBS has an Auto-Configuration Wizard. It opens the first time you launch OBS.
You can change them later under Settings → Output.
A scene is your screen layout. A source is anything inside it.
Speak and watch the meter. Keep it in the green and yellow. Avoid red.
Never share your Stream Key. Anyone with it can stream to your channel.
Keep it simple. Too many effects slow down your computer.
You can do both at once.
If frames drop, lower your bitrate or resolution. See the troubleshooting section below.
OBS can record without streaming. This is useful for tutorials, gameplay and webinars.
Create a scene. Add your sources. Check your audio levels.
Click Start Recording. Click Stop Recording when you finish. Your file saves to the path you chose.

See empty space around your video? Match your OBS output resolution to your camera resolution.
There are two ways to share your screen.
Display Capture shows your whole monitor. Use it for demos and tutorials.
Window Capture shows only one app. Use it for slides, browsers or documents. Viewers will not see anything else on your screen.
To add Window Capture:
Can’t see your app in the list? Restart the app, then restart OBS. If it still fails, use Display Capture.
To add an image:
Use a PNG with a clear background for logos.
To add text:
Use text for your event name, speaker names or social handles.
You can show two or more sources at the same time. A common layout is picture-in-picture. Your screen is large and your face is small.
Turn on Studio Mode to preview your scene before viewers see it. This helps you avoid mistakes on a live broadcast.
Hotkeys let you switch scenes with one key press. Pro streamers use them all the time.
Good hotkeys to set up:
Pick keys that you will not hit by accident.
Bitrate is how much data you send each second. Higher bitrate means better quality. It also needs a faster upload speed.
A simple rule: your upload speed should be at least double your bitrate. This leaves room for dips.
Test your upload speed before every big event.
Resolution: 426×240. Bitrate: 300–700 Kbps. Use it only on very weak connections.
Resolution: 640×360. Bitrate: 500–1,200 Kbps. Good for mobile viewers on slow networks.
Resolution: 854×480. Bitrate: 1,200–2,500 Kbps.
Resolution: 1280×720. Bitrate: 2,500–5,000 Kbps. A good balance for most streams.
Resolution: 1920×1080. Bitrate: 4,500–9,000 Kbps. Best for events, sports and professional broadcasts.
Resolution: 2560×1440. Bitrate: 8,000–16,000 Kbps. Needs a strong computer and a fast, stable connection.

Why CBR? It keeps the bitrate steady. This gives a smoother stream.
Why a 2-second keyframe? It matches how HLS delivers video to viewers. It helps the player switch quality cleanly.
Software or hardware encoder?
If your computer struggles, switch to a hardware encoder.
Use H.264 unless your platform says it supports something else. It plays on most devices.
